review 1: Harper's mother is poor and under-educated. Unable to make the rent Harper along with her mother and brother are forced out of their home and into a motel. Harper is asked to skip school to care for her brother while mom searches for work. Harper is angry and resentful about it all; sure this will cause her to again miss her opportunity to participant in the school poetry contest. There is much sadness to go around and it's all pretty depressing. The ending is unbelievable and everybody ends up way better off than they had any right to expect.
review 2: I loved this book. It was a very touching story about a difficult situation of which a lot of people are not aware. In such a wealthy country as ours, this should never occur. The story was very well written
... morefrom the point of view of a 10 year old girl. The characters were well developed, and really touched my heart. I loved the way Harper's poems were written into the story, and the poster for her poetry reading. Made me feel even more connected to the story. My favorite thing about this book was the way the author used words - well done. It also helped to have read "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, because it is related to the story. less

One I read with my kids. Lovely book, sensitive look at one family's experiences with homelessness.
