review 1: I had a really difficult time getting through this book; I kept finding myself totally bored and couldn't quite figure out why. I think the characters, for the most part, just did not appeal to me. And descriptions of Mary's grief just went on and on, over and over again. Other story threads got very repetitive as well. Williams' writing is very good, though, and hopefully her next novel will captivate me a bit more.
review 2: I really enjoyed reading this book. It was beautifully and subtly written. The author has a great feel for people and each character was perfectly developed and honest - I felt like each one could have had their own novel written for them but they all came together so well in this novel. The author wrote so that I felt like I was also
... more intimately familiar with and in love with this area of New Hampshire. The pacing of the book is slow, something that I don't always love, but it was the perfect pacing for this novel, and I loved the slow pacing here because the well written characters kept the pace very steady. What I loved most about this book was that the characters were so subtly compelling. The characters' personalities and the things that happen to them are not the most objectively interesting things the author could have come up with - everything was fairly ordinary, but it was all so honestly written that the result was compelling. less

Made it through chapter 13 but just wasn't into it anymore... Not a bad book, just not my style.

Gorgeous, a pleasure to read, and romantic in the best sense of the word.
