review 1: I read this book during breaks from subbing and had tears flowing by the end. I generally don't do well with animal stories and Rain Reign was no exception. This is the story of a 5th grade girl, Rose, who has Asperger's syndrome and whose father's inability to parent is compounded by her disability. She finds comfort in homonyms, her Uncle Weldon (thank goodness for Uncle Weldon!), and a stray dog her father brings home in the rain, Rain. Told from Rose's perspective, the reader gets a taste of what it might be like to have high-functioning autism. Despite her disability, Rose is able to make amazingly good and hard decisions in an often unkind and seemingly unfair world.
review 2: Rain Reign, by Ann M. Martin, this is a children’s novel that I would lo
... moreve to have available to my students in a classroom someday. I have it on my own Christmas List. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the character of Rose Howard. To be able to read in the perspective of a child that has Asperger’s is an incredible journey that one cannot understand until they pick up Rain Reign and read it for themselves. I would like to have this book as a class book that every child must read. This book would be a book that I would pick personally for my classroom. This book can show and demonstrate to students that everyone is different for many different reasons and we need to learn and accept each other as everyone is. less
