review 1: This is a fairly dark story made readable by the beautiful prose. "All she can do is try to bear witness"....this is what I think AMM is asking us to do as readers. As such there is no real resolution at the end, no big event from the past fully revealed (ie what actually happened on the balcony) so I'm left with a sense of dissatisfaction and it feels somewhat like the story suddenly wrapped up yet life is rarely tidily wrapped up so in that sense, the ending pages make sense.
review 2: Ann-Marie MacDonald has written a novel unlike her previous two. Rather than the tantalizing storytelling in third person and the rush with which readers devour her pages, here MacDonald presents a deeply intimate, deeply disturbing glance into the highly compartmentalized mind
... more of a housewife, pseudo-mother, and daughter of two obviously secretive and equally disturbed parents. The twists and turns and dry conversation that takes part between the "id" and the "I" is difficult to follow at times but fascinating in terms of the unravelling of Mary Rose's mind and existence. Questions unanswered remain and yet we are taken on a fascinating ride through the psyche and the spectrum of humanity. less

Paled in comparison to her precious books which were some of my favourite reads. Too much angst!

Probably one of the worst books I have ever read. Don't waste your time.
