review 1: What a great read! If you are a lover of MC stories this is a must read for you. Ann Mayburn has crafted a very different heroine for this biker book. The trials of the heroine's life were very different than I have read in any other biker novel. The hero was besotted with the heroine...no games no nonsense...he loved her. I found this really refreshing from other biker novels where the hero plays hard to get or not completely sold on just having his mate. This novel is a romp with bikers, theft, stalking, violence and lots of love. Swan's mother was a piece of work that caused trouble and that overflowed onto her daughters. I don't want to get into the plot because it is very tangled with family issues and biker business and was absolutely fast paced, you just can'... moret put the book down once you start it. The characters were all fully rounded with backgrounds revealed as you read. The arc of the story doesn't completely finish at the end...there is a kinda HEA but for the real ending in this story you need to read book 2. This was a fantastic read that I really enjoyed. I had to buy book 2 as soon as I finished this because I loved the characters so much that I had to find out how the story ends! ....This novel gets the t'irla recommendation and a 4.5 star rating. If you love Bikers you really must treat yourself and meet Smoke and Swan and the rest of the MC and friends:)
review 2: I really want to give this 2 stars for 'it's ok' but I feel mean doing that . I did like parts of it so I am giving this 3 stars for 'liked it', but with reservations, it hovers between 2 and 3. To be honest there are probably other 3 star reviews out there that cover the same issues I had with it. I loved the start of it ,told through Smoke ,the H's POV. It was intriguing and promised a sexy H and budding relationship, but it didn't live up to the hype. When Swan the h started giving her POV in the next chapter I was really put off by her voice. She just had annoying thoughts.Another reviewer said it was as if the author threw every trope in that she could think off and I thought that as well. It was too much. She was supposed to have a strange personality that isolated her from others , she also couldn't be touched by strangers or those she didn't trust, she was supposed to have trust issues because of her upbringing, yet she went off with every man who she was left alone with and these were criminal types, not law abiding sweethearts. Shopping trips with Hustler. , dinner with Hustler and Tom, she had lustful thought about them as well as Smoke, strong lust I got the impression she wanted them all to touch her, no issues for her here. I just don't think the author thought this out properly, I was expecting she would be more of a kickass Sarah Connor character, her personality was bizarre, especially taking in to account her upbringing. Also she had that trope of being a virgin who didn't realise she was pretty. Yet she let Smoke and Hustler dress her up like a Barbie doll in a skimpy bikini , then put on a floor show with Smoke as he oiled her up on the yacht. She let people talk to her like she was meat, not just the H. She worked in a strip club wearing skimpy outfits, yet she was a serious math geek. I don't know I found her personality was odd to get a handle on, so I always felt awkward with her. We find out more about her as the story progresses, she was brought up to be a hard core survivalist by her ex military dad and ex assassin stepmom in an isolated compound. It comes out that she had some brutal training from her dad and, even 3 days before meeting the H, was completing mountain climbing and very long military style hikes. Yet nothing that occurs in the story or her relationship with Smoke or anyone shows this. She comes across as a 20 year old blushing virgin. She does swear like a trouper, can identify makes of guns and when they need cleaning, but that's it. OK, right at the end when she visits her father, finally we see something of that training , but it was a little too late for me. Listen I don't mind a virgin h , but it has to feel credible. She watches hard core porn, every man she meets wants her in very crude ways, but she is a virgin. She never met a man who she felt anything for but suddenly she is so turned on by Smoke, Hustler and Tom that I fully expected there to be a sex scene with all the men in it. Also although I like a H who is crude and dirty and alpha, it annoys me when other men also treat her unless they are supposed to be the bad guys in the story. I cant believe there were not any sexy, muscle bound ex military survivalists in her compound back home. She is incredibly naïve, she reads all this erotica, but obviously none set within the MC world as she knows nothing about what an old lady is. Smoke tells her he wants her as his old lady, but she persists in asking what will happen when they split up. She actually seems very passive and stupid, which is weird considering her upbringing. I know Smoke at the end thinks she has high achieving autism, which might explain her missing relationship queues but that info came a little late. Lots of oral sex, too much fluid, never thought I would say that. There is probably a lot more I could complain about. It just didn't work for me. less
