Remastering Jerna
review 1: I really enjoyed this story... another of the best "non-consensual" BDSM stories I have read. There's definite BDSM and definite non-consensual sex in this story, but the non-consensual sex is given pretty brief treatment while the BDSM is very detailed and often about mind-games in addition to the physical. The main character is a man who, in his youth, discovered an enjoyment of submission, BDSM, pain, and homosexual relationships. But he then fell in love with and married a woman who he loved very much. When his ex-lover shows up, he is torn from the arms of his family by a false allegation of child sexual abuse and sent to a brutal prison where prisoners are contracted out as cheap labor during the day. Eventually, he applies for and is able to get, because of his hist... moreory, a position as a prostitute in a luxury hotel, living at the hotel and escaping the suicide-inducing conditions of the prison, but still under "house arrest." So then the question raised is... are the activities he engages in at the hotel consensual? He is required to provide sexual services as a condition of his employment and eventually submissive services. And if he loses his job, he goes back to prison to be further brutalized, deprived of food, privacy, and forced to work hard labor. But mostly he enjoys it. And then he develops a relationship with an unknowingly brutal master, who he teaches about proper BDSM. Can he enter into a relationship? What are his obligations to his family left behind?I found the ending a little disappointing, a little too neat, but it was an ending. And sometimes the characters, especially the other characters in the brothel, seemed a bit strange, a bit inconsistent... but Jerna was a well-built character, a strong moral submissive pain-slut. And his relationships essentially made sense. I look forward to reading more by Ms. Somerville.
review 2: Beautiful, raw challenging read that defied my expectations. This book is about the journey of Jerna, an architect who is falsely accused of child perversion and convicted based on perjured testimonies. He is sentenced to pay off an obscene amount of money. Not willing to bring any more despair to his family, he accepts the terms and is determined to repay every single penny for however long it takes and not burden his wife and children with the sum. While in jail he faces the corrupt justice system and endures the most degrading of acts for the sake of his loved ones. Seriously contemplating suicide, he stumbles upon an ad that requires a prisoner to perform “favors” to the clients of a renowned establishment. Escaping the cruelty of prison he starts his training as a “slave” choosing the least of two evils. While working he stumbles upon a man who reawakens desires he has long thought had conquered. This book handles the corruption of the state and the judicial system beautifully. It also encourages you to accept your true self and live by your principals even in the worst of times. Jerna found kindness and understanding in a most unexpected “frowned upon” place. This book really turns your beliefs upside down. A truly emotional heartwarming story. less
