review 1: This book has a fun premise, at least for those of us who consider such premises fun: an 18-year-old girl goes to work as a nanny for a super-rich family, but starts to question her own sanity when the mother accuses her of doing things she never did and saying things she never said. I had two major issues with this book: one, the main character, Annie, is to my mind, kind of dumb, at least in her relationship with her manipulative boss. She seemed too willing to forgive her her faults and cruelty. This would be fine in the sense that everyone has been dumb in a relationship before (I know I have!), but the excuse given was simply that because Annie was coming from such a rough home life, she was willing to do anything to keep her new, privileged life intact. Again, a not-... moreunbelievable conceit, but it was, to use the parlance, told much more than shown. The second and perhaps more grievous part of the book was the relationship Annie develops with Owen, the next door neighbor. Owen falls with Annie because it serves the plot: the end. The ending of the book is sufficiently creepy, but I feel like it too was undermined by Owen conveniently being there to serve as the hero. All in all, a modern day take on "The Yellow Wallpaper" (and yes, there is a reference to that story in the book, just in case you missed that fact) that doesn't live up to its potential, at least for this reader. I gather less critical teens might think differently.
review 2: This was a fast paced and intense read. I liked the elements of gothic horror and the literary references and allusions. It really made me want to read the yellow wallpaper. However, the romance was very insta lovey and Owen was a vaguely characterized Mary Sue. I never quite bought the thoughts and actions of Annie as contextually realistic and her decent into madness felt rushed. The ending was a bit of a letdown as it all tied up too neatly and again unrealistically less

Liked it...until the ridiculous ending. Kinda "ruined" it for me.
