review 1: A gripping novel based around four (real life) people who fled pre-Nazi Germany and their experiences trying to oppose the regime while balancing their safety and the need to fit into their new adopted homes. I never had a feel for how difficult it was to be a German when (at this time) Hitler's regime was still seen as the good guy and these people as agitators for their foresight to see what was about to unfold in Germany. Fascinating and compelling. This was a real eye-opener on the pre-war period. Anna Funder has won many award and deservedly so, her writing is beautiful and her characters gripping. I highly recommend this fascinating book.
review 2: I had a hard time getting into this book. I wish that wasn't the case. I really wanted to like it. And I c... morean't point to any fault in the book that made me not love it. I guess we're just a bad match.The book is about German anti-Nazi activists. But for some reason, the parts I most enjoyed were the brief scenes of one of the characters in modern times in Sydney, Australia. It's like watching The Princess Bride and saying your favorite part was the grandfather reading to Fred Savage.After I read the book I learned it's based on a true story. I think some of the characters are real and others are invented.Besides the modern Sydney scenes, I did get something out of the other scenes. I don't want to say I enjoyed them, because they were pretty sad and disturbing. Betrayals and deaths. Stuff like that. less
