review 1: War is brewing in Germany, 1938. Franziska Mangold's family is torn apart. After her father was arrested by the Nazis, her parents decide to secretly take her out of the country to England on the kinder transport with many other Jewish children like her. She must reconstruct a new life in London with a Jewish family who takes her in. Though she is away from Germany, she is still looked at as the enemy. Frances has to figure out who she is and who she wants to be. And even harder, if she will stay with her new family who love her more than she has ever been loved, or to go back to where her roots take her.
review 2: Unconventional and stirring tale of a young German girls escape to England at the beginning of WWII. This book traces through seven years the new f
... moreamily she lives with, relationships she engages in and how her survival methods in a new country. Themes of naming and how family creates the self are crucial. Very similar to Ruta Sepetys' "Between Shades of Gray" but ultimately more expansive and powerful. There is a happy ending but there is a sad ending, a disappointing one, a vague one. This book does not have a typical structure and Ziska is not always a sympathetic character. But that only strengthens the impact of what happens. Really excellent read and would recommend to anyone looking for a nuanced historical fiction about child refugees in that era less
