review 1: This story is about 2 children, brother and sister, who are forced to join sides in an ongoing war in Liberia. They adapt to their harsh conditions and learn to survive among such cruel men that took them from their families. I really enjoyed how the author had both Nopi and Lucky tell the story from their unique points of view. This brutal story can aid in the teaching struggles that this country has faced in the world. It certainly helped me gain some perspective of the struggle during hard times and what it might be like to grow up too fast.
review 2: Son of A Gun tells the story of two children who were taken by soldiers and turned into child soldiers in warfare. The book could be used in connection with the curriculum in a lesson or unit on fiction and his
... moretorical fiction and would also be a great way to integrate literature into a lesson on geography due to the maps. The visual appeal of the book is great due to the maps and the visions that you get while reading the words on the pages from the children. I had a strong reaction to this book due to the content that it covered, but I believe it covered it in a tasteful and realistic way. The genre is historical fiction and the intended audience is a 3rd-6th grade child. less

Really quick read- but great story told from two children who lost their child hood.

This isn't a book for children....at best a teenager but certainly not for children.

A bit disjointed. I wish the narrative had been more linear.
