review 1: I always enjoy visiting with Anne Lamott, which is what it feels like when I read her emotionally charged, mordantly wry, beautifully written reflections on faith and life. But I should have realized there would be a lot of dying people in this book, and that Lamott would be wresting the "small victories" mentioned in the title from her suffering through their deaths. (Ohhh...That's why the "moments of grace" are "improbable." Duh!) And honestly, though maybe I'm shallow, I would rather be sharing her happier moments like having a new grandchild, as in the one she wrote with her son, Some Assembly Required. Even though she is Anne Lamott. So that is why this is a three-star review instead of the customary 5 stars.
review 2: After being disappointed in Lamott's
... morelast two collections I was glad to find this one had more substance. Some of the essays have appeared elsewhere. Lamott explores friendship, family, aging, God, immortality and forgiveness with grace and humor. Some contain laugh-out-loud sentences - "I thought such awful thoughts that I cannot say them because they would make Jesus want to drink gin straight out of the cat dish." Others brings tears and smiles of recognition. less
