review 1: Lucy finds herself and becomes a novelist. Julia moves to California. Christy ignores infidelity and has another baby from the frozen egg department (I'm guessing here since the doorman seemed to be out of the picture), and Robyn performs medical procedures on herself in the bathroom floor before going blissfully off to have sex.The men are some what beige, but then this is a book about the female characters and their journey into mid-life.
review 2: I was initially unimpressed by this book. One of the main characters who opens the novel, comes across self-involved, boring and self-absorbed. Pick whatever word has “self” in it and there you go. But I continued on with the book because it deserved a chance- as all books do. And I’m glad I did. This nove
... morel follows a group of friends who go from being self-involved and colorless twits to women pursuing authenticity and enlightenment. They’re searching for a way to fully inhabit their lives and get out of the hollowness that perfection inevitably brings. It was Julia, another main character and a commercial writer, who sealed the book for me. She tells her Lucy that the “splinter of ice” artists need doesn't mean going about being cold and hard for art's sake. The splinter of ice is “the ability to distance yourself from people and observe them.” I love this. So often writers (Graham Greene in this “splinter of ice” instance) speak about their craft and creations, using mystifying and elegant phrasing that leads readers to doubt and fear, instead of leading them towards illumination. Casey is a honest writer and she cuts through the crap. She’s interested in people pursuing goodness and that’s something I can never get enough of. less
