review 1: OMG LOVED this book! Eleanor of Aquitaine is my hero and I love how strong, outspoken, and witty she was in here. OhmyGod her wit! She is hilarious in this book- I love the part where she's all like "I've-made-a-list" and Louis doesn't have a clue how to deal with her. And then how she gets into the Crusade is genius. To any sexists who say women aren't as good leaders as men, I present to you Eleanor of Aquitaine! It's interesting to meet her before Henry II and Richard the Lionheart ever came into the picture. I loved this book, for how feminist it was, how funny it can be, and mostly how it was so well-written. I like how she's remembered by the author not as Henry II's wife or Richard the Lionheart's mother, but Eleanor of Aquitaine.
review 2: Anne O'Brien
... morenever fails to write a historical fiction novel with an interesting heroine with a bold voice, and Eleanor's story was no different. The choices that she makes for her narrative when it comes to interpreting the sources she has are very rarely far fetched (though, to be fair, when they are far fetched they are very, very far) and over all a very interesting writer. She makes history come alive, and in the best way. Eleanor was great, and the romance was amazing. If only Anne O'Brien wrote longer books! less
