review 1: The fictional story of Katherine de Valois, a princess of France, her short-lived marriage to Henry V and her enduring love for Owen Tudor, a steward in her household. Although little is known of her historically, she was the mother of Henry VI, the hapless king defeated by the Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses, and the grandmother of Henry Tudor who defeated Richard III at Bosworth to become Henry VII, the founder of the Tudor dynasty. Thus, she is very important in her own right. This book sees her develop from a naive, idealistic young girl to the strong-minded Dowager Queen who fights for the love of her life, Owen Tudor. It has one of the most intensely moving love scenes I've ever read when the pair declare their love for each other using the third person, that is as... more mistress and servant. Sadly, they had only six years together before illness claimed Katherine's life. Another winner from Anne O'Brien.
review 2: Started well but as it went on (for all 619 pages) it seemed to lack a little substance. Perhaps this was because as the author comments very little is known about this historical royal figure, but unfortunately it needed either more imagination or a little trimming and editing. I'll be interested to read more by this author though on better known or recorded figures as for the most part the prose and telling is good if somewhat restrained compared to Phillipa Gregory. less
