review 1: Lush in nouns, elegant in punctuation, with a conversational tone that is never condescending. It really is as if she is sitting across from you in a Nawlins restaurant over a bowl of crawfish etoufee and a glass of sweet tea, just telling you this as she thinks it.My "return" to belief (I still am not strong enough to call it Faith with a capital F) involved Independent Catholicism with a little mysticism from Alan Watts, but has diverted to the intellectually deconstructed analyses of Bart Ehrman and Bishop John Shelby Spong. THEY have convinced me that God will not be contained between bound pages and covers.....Still, I admire her articulate passion about her reversion. I just wonder if non-liturgical Protestants will "get" this book.Possibly the most awesome theologic... moreal statement I ever read is from John Sanford, Jungian analyst and Episcopal priest, regarding "incarnation": Jesus, in his consciousness, bore the will of God. I certainly do NOT take exception to any theological or philosophical stance taken by her in this wonderful book, but I cannot go back to the dogmas of my childhood: Virgin birth, walking on water, vicarious atonement, transubstantiation, etc. Still it must be true that when people saw Jesus they saw God. Why else would the ruling class have executed him?
review 2: I want to start out by saying that I want to thank Anne Rice for writing this thoughtful book. This is the first time that I read a book by an author who was at one time an atheist, and found that I was able to relate to her and to what she was saying. I think every Christian has experienced being conflicted in their walk from one time to another. I liked this book very much, and came away with some things to ponder. I look forward to reading some of her other books. less
