review 1: It's probably been more than a decade since I last read Rice. After the masterful fifth volume of Vampire Chronicles "Memnoch the Devil", the last one I delved into was "Pandora." So I met "Angel Time" with its due enthusiasm. The plot was particularly odd but engaging. There are nods to interviews with other-beings, with creatures of light. The tan-colored tone is bothersome though, as her deep purples and crimson-blacks and erotic violence are what cemented Rice as the Literary Mistress of the Dark in the first place. But angels? (And, what's worse, no demons!) And time-travel? Well, the plot that involves a peek at the 13th century is insightful, educational, at least. But what else? Nah-thing. This is a minor novel; but at least, its not a tremendous disaster follow-up... more, such as "Dr. Sleep," or "Imperial Bedrooms," or "Saturday," or "Run," or "Freedom," or "The Goldfinch," or "The Snow Queen," or "Bridget Jones 3."There are salvageable parts here, which makes the fact that its pretty mediocre-ish all the sadder.
review 2: Many other reviews condemn the book as "just too christian". I'm not sure I see it that way at all, but completely agree with reviews stating it dragged on and on and was way too much focus on the idea of salvation. That being said, I would have given the book 4 stars had it just started in the middle of the book, as I found the historical fiction part very engaging with love able characters. I'm not sure why there was a first 1/3 of the book at all and even when we see the glimpse into Toby's life, while the pace picked up, I didn't picture how it really fit or flowed to the rest of the story. I'm sure many of these details will be important in coming books of the series, but if the next one doesn't get really interesting very quickly, this series might end up on the "fail" shelf. On a side note: why do so many historical fiction writers feel it so necessary to have modern time mixed with the period they are talking about?! I feel like it ruins a lovely story by pulling me out of that dream land so many good books take you to, like waking up from a dream you wish you could stay in or have at least seen in play out? Curious. less

Great book! This is a light, sweet story about a hit man who is given the chance to use his skills to help people instead of hurting them. The author does a great job with the characters - really letting you know their feelings and motivations. I liked the positive message that no matter what mistakes someone has made, there is always an opportunity for redemption and forgiveness. If you've never read an Anne Rice book or are not a fan of her darker work, this might be a good one to try.

I really have to get past Rice and the vampire thing. The only thing that I have read from her was about vampires and witches so the angel thing throws me off a little. In this though Toby takes a journey from murder to redemption. All through the story there is talk of forgiveness and the lack of but for Toby God is merciful. I enjoyed the story and I'm glad that I picked it up because every now and then we all need reminders of the grace and mercy that can be stowed upon us.
