review 1: This time the story is simply too short, and not just because I prefer to spend as much as possible in a story universe. The time allotted to Paul coming around, letting go of his hurt and grabbing ahold of a second chance at happiness is just not enough. Especially not considering that Paul is by now a pretty hardened case who doesn’t even relate well with his friends (exactly why ARE they his friends anyway? He behaves like an arse.).I could have loved this if the author had spent more time on Paul coming out of his shell, and on Trevor working to convince him it was worth it. It did manage to make me feel for him to some degree, but when somebody is so well established as a dick, it takes more redemptive power than I got here. I realize, it’s tough balancing tw... moreo people who both behaved very badly towards each other, one in high school, one 10 years later — but I am more inclined to forgive the one who did it in high school. There are also some uneven spots from Trevor’s end — did he really expect such easy forgiveness? Sure, he put a lot of effort into romancing Paul, but so what? Grand gestures don’t impress me all that much. Overall, I just didn’t buy such speedy development, and I ended up a little resentful because I wanted Trevor to spend months to prove himself (not over-the-top as he had, but slow and steady).2.5 stars, rounding down with some trepidation because this is by far not as bad as most books I give 2 stars to. Have I mentioned lately how much i dislike Goodreads' rating system?
review 2: Paul was hurt so badly in high school that he has turned into a snarky, sarcastic bitter man who does not keep his opinions to himself. He feels he has to hurt those around him. The interesting thing about Paul is he is a romantic at heart and still in love with the man that hurt him 9 years prior, even though he won't admit it to himself. Trevor wants another chance, he never stopped loving Paul. He sets out to win Paul back and does it very romantically, Paul has to get over the hurt and decide to stop being bitter. With the help of good friends (he did not realize he had) he is able to forgive Trevor and love him again. less
