review 1: As she is told is certainly the most controversial, but also the most disturbing book I have read this year. The book covers the fantasy of a lot of readers most male, some female about Total Power Exchange in a 24/7 relationship. The good thing about this book is that Anneke Jacob takes you slowly but inevitably step by step towards that relationship. Both from the dominant as from the submissive point of view. And thus the reader ends with images that are well over its own limitations without putting the book down. The reviews of this book are as extreme as the contents of the book. That is understandable. If there is not a dominant or submissive bone in your body you only see what is on the surface. But below the surface Anneke Jacob shows a world that is up to and some... moretimes beyond your comfort zone. Therefore I would like to recommend this book to all of those who are curious what is underneath the surface.
review 2: Finished, FINALLY! The second half improved a bit with the addition of more people. I feel like I just climbed ten thousand stairs. Desperately in need of an editor, I found the writing cold and over-intellectualized. I understand what Anneke Jacobs was trying to do,'slaves are people, too!' but it didn't make it any more enjoyable a journey This book is not terrible, but it's certainly not a romance.Did I find anything offensive? Well, no. Maia did seem to enjoy all her tortures and restrictions, so who am I to judge? Did i find it sexy? For the most part, I did not. There were a few fleeting sexy moments, but the chilly distance make it more like reading an historical tome.Too long and too dry. less

I couldn't finish this book. Found it too master/slave. Too demeaning.

Not my thing, hard to read, and a little too long and drawn out.
