Tanpa dia aku bukan apa-apa, sebuah buku tanpa kata-kata._The Various Flavours of Coffee_
review 2: A love story with profound historic background, and the arcane knowledge of coffee. I'd never thought of drinking coffee could be that such a complicated matter. This novel highlighted issues such as dandy in the 19th century (hedonism?), slaveries, suffrage and capitalism. I was suprised that the last part of the book was devoted to suffrage movement which eventually led to Emily's death. So do I saw how the female were being treated unfairly that time, those things might seem ridiculous today, but it did actually happen. Women were supposed to do "women's job" - as a full time family taker, without being involved in votings. Men were simply being a douchebag when they thought their status quo was being challenged. Besides, looking at Fikre's betrayal of Robert for an eunuch she loved, Mulu, the author is trying to say that, love without sex actually DID exist, at least in his novel. (I think many people would have something to say about this). I am sad that Robert and Emily couldn't live happily ever after, after both of them failed in their pursuit of love, after Hector died. They didn't get Hector's blessing. And the involvement of Arthur Brewer made all the things worse.I spotted several interesting lines that depicted the shrewdness of the author in writing romances:When asked what sort of men will capture her heart, Emily said, "... someone I can admire. Someone who has achieved something in the world, and intends to go on achieving great things. Someone who can see what's wrong, but who knows how to put it right; someone with such passion that he can make other people see things his way."After Fikre had abandoned Robert, he said, "From Egypt I wandered up to Italy, and spent the summer on the shores of Lake Como, where I finished, and destroyed, a novel about a man who falls in love with a slave. It was a terrible book, but once the flames had eaten into the last page of the manuscript I knew, finally, that I was free of her."The words are even more evocative in the following lines: "I discovered something important, during that long return. I had loved Fikre with an absolute physical passion, and even something a bit more besides. Despite what had happened, I found that I hoped she was happy. That may not seem like much of a discovery, compared to the naming of Lake Victoria or pinpointing the source of the Nile. But for me it was a new territory, to be marked in full on the hitherto blank atlas of the heart." less

Too much poorly written smut, too little suffragism, but a good amount of coffee.

Not quite as good as his first two books. But captivating none the less.
