review 1: This book, and author have jumped right to the top of my list. Along with Sanderson, Martin, Weeks, Moon. The story is great, and expanding nicely. The characters are some of the best. They develop, and grow right in front of you. Ryan does a fantastic job with this world, and the magic system. If you like any of the authors I mentioned above, I think you will like this book very much.
review 2: It's fair to say that Ryan is the literary successor to David Gemmell. But I use the term "successor" in the manner in which Steven Erikson is the literary successor to Glen Cook; bigger, faster, stronger and better in very way that matters. So yeah, he's basically Gemmell on steroids. If you like Gemmell (and who doesn't love the tall tales of Druss, Waylander, e... moretc?) then you will love Ryan. Read this book. less
