review 1: This was a wonderful surprise! It sounded like I'd like it, but I had no idea how much.Fun storyline with interesting characters.Poor orphan attempting to make her way in the world.Nasty "ton" who want to blame her for everything.A variation on the "locked room" murder.Strange man who may or may not be trying to help. And a ghost. And lots of animals. The highest compliment I can give is to say it made me think of Diana Wynne Jones' books and from me, that is the best there is. The girl with seemingly no power who impacts all around her and the stranger who is not what he seems--very Diana.I look forward to further adventures.
review 2: Note: The author, Anya Wylde, presented me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.Lucy attempts to prove herse
... morelf innocent of the murder of her employer, Lord Sedley and the theft of his family jewels. Her vivid imagination runs rampant and her ‘plans’ to find the real killer/thief becoming more outrageous as she becomes more desperate. Lord Adair returns to Ms. Wylde’s pages when he is asked to find the missing jewels (the murder being added reluctantly and only after he mentioned it) making a very fitting opponent/proponent to Lucy. All the characters are great, distinctive, and wacky in their own way; Aunt Sedley, the ghost, is mentioned in chapter 8 but actually shows up in chapter 10 and, I feel, is a wonderful addition to the story line. The only jarring note, to me, was the drinking of coffee when I associate tea being drunk in England (although tea drinking is also mentioned). I liked the end and how Lucy finally persuaded Lord Adair to let her join him. This was a fun read and I see many happy reading hours ahead. Although Penelope is still my favorite of Ms. Wylde’s books, I highly recommend Murder at Rudhall Manor. less
