review 1: It's not common for me to give five stars but fuck me did this deserve it. Urgh just so much more bad-ass, bloody and generally horrifying (in a good way) than the first book, I just can't.. I loved the developments I saw in each character, going into much more depth with the supporting characters we saw in the first book but were never really focused on. Robin, for example, was given so much more to her character which I loved. Again with the main character Widdershins, she kept her snarkiness which I hope never goes but was given more depth by showing her horrified understanding about what she must face to save her city. One thing that I didn't really like was the fact that apparently everyone was in love with Widdershins. I kind of understood it with Renard considering ... morehis years of friendship with her. I also liked the fact that Robin revealed she felt the same way for Widdershins which helped fill out her character as well as add an interesting part to the story (a part which is rare in all the y-a fiction that I've read, as much as I enjoy that sort of twist). I didn't really care for Julian as a character, I mean I felt sorry for Widdershins and everything but it just felt like they weren't that great a couple and even if he'd lived they probs wouldn't have been able to stay together. Honestly I wasn't too phased by his death, it was noble and everything but I expected it tbh.I didn't like the plot as much as I did the first book, it's just that the plot of the first was much more personal to Widdershins and relevant to her history. I'd have preferred it to be the other way round so we would be introduced to Widdershins first with the plot of the second book then given the plot of the first book in this book (if that makes sense) so I could develop a connection to Widdershins first then learn more about her through the rest of the series by delving into her past. Overall an amazing book but if Renard and Widdershins do not end up together (or if anyone else dies) I will tear all the pages out of the books and promptly burn down my house. :-)
review 2: False Covenant is as good as, if not better, than the first book. The plot is fantastic, the relationship between Widdershins and Olgun is as compelling as ever, and the villain is beyond creepy. In fact, the best part of the entire novel is the villain’s dialogue. We also learn more about Widdershins’ friends and get introduced to Igraine and Evrard, who quickly became two of my favorite supporting characters. Once again, I feel that this series has a very adult tone, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to someone interested in more mature fantasy novels. The main reason why I haven’t rated this book five stars is because a major character dies towards the end. I should have realized after reading Thief’s Covenant that Marmell loves to kill off his characters, sometimes for no discernible reason other than to devastate Widdershins. But the death in this book is particularly troublesome because the character who gets the axe is one I had truly grown to love. I suppose one could argue that this character’s death is the impetus for the decision Widdershins makes in the epilogue, opening up many doors for new adventures. But still, I wish Marmell had found a better way to get there than by killing off yet another supporting character.Ultimately, I did love this story, and I’m definitely going to pick up the third book in the series. But now I know: no character is safe. Anyone can die at any time for any reason. Fair warning. less
