review 1: Ari is an author who turns the fantasy genre on its head. He provides a fresh and interesting take on traditional monsters and tropes of the genre. This novel takes the tale of the struggle against and the dark lord and turns it inside out by making the dark lord the main character. But it isn't a tale of evil and conquest, but rather a tale of what happens later, when the dark lord himself (now in hiding) is living with the consequences of his actions. If Akira Kirosawa had written a tale in the modern (rpg influenced) fantasy genre, I imagine it would read much like The Conqueror's Shadow.
review 2: Easily one of my favorite books, right underneath the Nightangel Trilogy and the Hunger Games trilogy. sci-fi/fantasy books have always been my sort of books, and... more quite frankly, I'm one to judge a book by it's cover. This book I managed to randomly pick out and think 'Meh, the cover looks alright. I'll give it a try'. Besides, it couldn't be as bad as the last book I read, Ender's Shadow. Well, let me tell you, this book really pulled on a good amount of the right strings to play out a sort of story I'm not entirely used to. It broke off the usual path that most books follow, especially with a once evil character being the main. And, quite frankly, it managed to apply just the right amount of human emotions here and there, giving me a good chuckle and at least a little bit of a connection with the characters. Very practical book and a very good read. Definitely recommend it. less
