review 1: This book gives a new perspective for me about the "Arsenal of Democracy" that was the industrial might of the United States preceding and throughout World War II. I found it a very interesting read with good flow, giving me new information on programs such as Liberty Ships, the B-29, Higgins Boats, and others. The book also gives biographical information on William S. Knudson and Henry Kaiser, two giants of industry that aided American preparedness and war efforts through tireless determination.I would have given the book four stars if it were not for the editing. There are some serious editing/proofreading errors. For example: "Meanwhile Hudson Motors . . . supplied fuselage waste sections and tail gun turrets." It should have read "waist sections" which were actuall... morey parts of the aircraft.Despite the editing and proofreading, a recommended read.
review 2: An excellent exposition of the roles of Big Bill Knudsen (formerly chairman of GM) and Henry J Kaiser in mobilizing US automotive, steel, aluminum, ans ship building industries to produce the weapons required to win WWII. The risks taken by both both manufacturers and air crews to get the B-29 deployed, often at the costs of the air crew's lives, highlights the risk aversion of today's public and private sectors. less
