review 1: Good to the last sentence. And I wonder if Kyle would hate this, but I feel like there was a GIRLS-esqueness to these stories, written in a time before GIRLS existed. They're funny, twisted, inappropriate at times. The girls are drifting--not identity-seeking, but waiting for their identity to find *them*, which I think is a pretty great critique of the contemporary female experience, at least for those of a certain age.
review 2: This collection of short stories is entertaining, but also often awkward, brutal, heartbreaking. This is not a feel good collection. I was entertained and kept going. Some of the stories were better than others. And I agree with other reviewers that the story about the boy is the best, most relateable story. I found almost all the fe... moremale characters (except for Tree in the story about the boy) to be totally unrealistic and at times obnoxious. None of the women spoke their minds, none shared their real opinions, and most buried pain and hurt. Most didn't even express anger internally. They just swallowed their sorrow as if it was some cross to bare. I could not relate to any of the women, other than recognizing annoying characteristics I have seen in people who are no longer my friends. I'm okay of course with a character having this personality trait, but all the women? The author does not provide in these short stories a variety of perspectives, but rather a picture that all women are the same inside and sort of pitiful. less
