So I actually bought this book on a whim. It wasn’t planned, I was just browsing through the YA section when I found a copy of this. After reading the plot, I knew I had to get it asap! What actually got my attention was the character being a descendant of a killer, the infamous Blood Countess, Elizabeth Bathory.
The story actually begins in a small town in Maine, with Emily Porter starting anew. She underwent an operation to wipe/erase her memory and start over that is until her past came hunting her again. Turns out, she is a descendant of Elizabeth Bathory who has the ability of influencing others and she is being hunted for the sins of her ancestors.
I liked so many things about this, thus the 5 out of 5 freaking stars rating. It was fast paced, the story was very well written, it’s definitely a book that I couldn’t put down. In addition, I just love how the author created a story with a historical twist. We all know Elizabeth Bathory (or at least I do). I definitely love that I was questioning a lot of things, why Emily had her memory erased, the loyalty of each characters throughout the entire book, the secrets she buried and most importantly the relationship between Emily and Luka (btw, I am your new fangirl). In addition, the surprises that the story has are endless. You think you know what’s happening, you think the author finally drops the bomb but hello, there’s something new to discover. Oh, and can I just mention the ending, what in the world was that? Major book hangover right there.
I finished reading this book about 2 weeks ago and I am so happy to announce that I finally got my hands on the sequel, Firstborn. This is actually an underrated book that deserves to be read by more people! — Rafi
