review 1: I loved seeing Captain Lacey come home, partly because we get to see how veterans of the Napoleonic Wars were treated. Maimed soldiers came home to England, but society was not prepared to deal with so many men with missing limbs, etc. This book - as well as the others, but this on especially - is an interesting exploration of how English society and culture was changing at all levels. In A Death in Norfolk, we see more of the middle and lower class society. I also loved seeing the further development of Lacey's relationship with Lady Breckenridge. I have greatly enjoyed watching their love affair unfold.
review 2: Captain Lacey, his wealthy, powerful backer Grenville, his lovely Donata and his nemesis Denis are back. They are in Norfolk where Lacey's family ho
... moreme and his past become part of another mystery to be solved. It’s not necessary to have read the previous books in this series. However, reading the earlier novels makes this one a much richer experience. Ashley Gardner has created strong characters who are perfectly imperfect. Her complex plot moves action among vivid descriptions of Norfolk’s scenery, including wind, rain and mud. A bit of a backstory fleshes out Denis, the criminal mastermind who holds much over Lacey’s head. Lacey’s relationship with Donata could be warmer. They obviously care for each other and now are betrothed. It’s time to heat them up a bit. This is the seventh novel in the series and is still fresh. They all are perfect mysteries to read with tea, cookies and a storm raging outside. Gardner is a talented writer who successfully moves among several genres with ease. less
