A Cherry Cola Book Club
review 1: This book had a cute enough premise but I did not like it. I'm not sure the author has ever attended a book club. The fundamental flaw that I just couldn't get over is that book clubs and libraries don't really go together. For a book club you need many copies of one book all at once. And most libraries, especially small town libraries don't have multiple copies of the same book. This book never dealt with this fundamental issue. Also, they use a podium for their book club? Really? I would never belong to a book club which required me to stand up at a podium to speak. The whole book felt forced. The story was really redundant and too much drivel.
review 2: Saving libraries, organizing book clubs - these are things I've done, so this book sounded perfect for
... more me. What a disappointment! First, the conversations are stilted and unnatural. The author is a man but has written a book with mainly female characters. He has absolutely no ear for the way women speak and as a result the women are dull and lifeless. He frequently tells the reader how charming his leading lady is, but she certainly doesn't come across that way. He does slightly better with his men. The second problem for me is that he doesn't seem well acquainted with small town libraries. They are frequently inviting, bustling centers, but this one lacked story book hours, after school programs, activities for seniors, fundraisers, speakers, and until the very end even a book club. less
