review 1: Jay Porter, struggling black lawyer in Houston, one night saves a woman from drowning and begins to get sucked into a world of murder, politics, a dockworkers strike, and illegal oil profits. Friends from back in his civil rights day rear their heads and are in powerful positions in the city. For a time Jay figures on letting things slide until he is setup. All he was doing was saving a woman's life and now a hit man'safter him. Unravelling this mystery is like peeling an onion. I didn't really care for the author's style or the civil rights thing as it's an American thing but the story is good.
review 2: Just got yelled at by Tarah for not updating goodreads in a year, so here goes some manic reviewing...This was a novel set in 1970s-1980s Houston... perha
... moreps I shouldn't have read this the week of my birthday because it just reminded me of how much has changed since my childhood (sigh) and yet how much has stayed the same (bigger sigh). Interesting perspective on the transition from the Civil Rights Era, oil greed, and poverty/petty crime. It could have used some tighter editing, but I was still absorbed in the plot. less

Very interesting and suspenseful...but ending in an abrupt, unsatisfying conclusion. : (

I found it so tedious that I had to give up trying to read it.
