Jonah Beckett has been in love with his older brother’s best friend, George “Laurie” DeWitt, since he was thirteen-years-old. When his boyfriend, Dirk, breaks up with him for refusing to put out, Jonah uses his heartbreak over the situation as an excuse to ask Laurie to teach him all about sex before he starts college in the fall. Problem is, he made Dirk up, and Jonah has no idea what will happen when Laurie finally finds out the truth.
What I think of the book:
I have some mixed feelings about this book.
On one had we have the premise – “I’ll lie to him and emotionally blackmail him to get what I want” – which pisses me off, and on the other we have the execution which is actually pretty good. Granted, the characters could use some more development, but this is a short story, so I’m going to let that slide. However, if this was a novel, I would’ve taken 1/2 star (although you know I use things other than stars to rate books) because of them.
Anyway, as I said, one of the characters – Jonah, lies, hoping that would help him start a relationship with Laurie. After I got over my desire to jump in the book, grab Jonah by the shoulders and shake him until I gave him a concussion because that was an ass of a move for him to make, I actually had fun with the book.
The writing is simple, but pleasantly so, the thing you’d want to peruse when you’ve had a long day and just want to chill. There’s some drama, but not too much of it, and while Jonah managed to make me angry on one other occasion before the book ended (I’m not going to give you details about this part as that would contain spoilers), I actually kind of like him. Even though he did some very stupid and downright immoral things (again: you want a relationship with someone and you lay down the foundation for that with a lie and emotional blackmail?!).
All in all, Wanting by Piper Vaughn is a pleasant short read to engage in on a Sunday afternoon.
Who would I recommend this book to? I’d recommend Wanting to people who enjoy “my brother’s best friend” and “friends to lovers” type of stories.
