review 1: I discovered this book by chance in a bookstore, and I decided to buy it as it was on sale. I was surprised to find that this book is fantastic. It contains advice that everyone should hear as soon as possible in life. Augusten Burroughs teaches you how to cope with many of life's downsides with knowledge learned from his life. In it he says, "I am a complete and total f***up. Which is exactly why I am equipped to write this book and tell you how to live." It did take me a while to get into it, but once I did I realized how great his insight is. I believe that if you have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others, then you absolutely should. I feel like this book has shifted my perspective on life (in a good way), and I will definitely be lending it to others to... more read.
review 2: I've avoided Augusten Burroughs until my sister's husband gifted me this book. It was a pleasant surprise, and remarkably resonant - at least for me. The problem is his tendency to generalize, when I can imagine many people do not share his particular sensibilities, personality, & experiences (for example, "how I stopped drinking is I just stopped"). I do, though, I found. The book verges on cheesy "self-help" in tone at moments, but Burroughs compensates with an impressive and gutsy approach to difficult/terrifying-to-articulate issues (death, in particular). Overall, an insightful, timely, even inspiring read for me, personally. less

It's like a harsh version of CBT for laymen.
