review 1: More like a 2.5. Not a genre I typically read, but it was fun to mix it up a bit. I liked the way that so many different worlds were brought together (a Sikh man who was in the Indian army, a rich Senator from Massachusetts, poor immigrants working on Martha's Vineyard during the off-season, a Vietnam veteran in Boston, etc.). Unfortunately, parts of this book were just so unrealistic and the main character's relationship with the Senator's wife drove me absolutely nuts. Overall, though, the writing was solid and I thought this was a good first novel by Amin Ahmad.
review 2: I had a difficult time putting down this book and essentially read it in two sessions. Lucky for me that the second in the series is now out and I can just continue Ranjit Singh's story.... more Besides an engaging story, Ranjit, a Sikh and ex-military man, is a sympathetic character whose history told in flashbacks draws you in and let's you see the type of man he is. His approach to his current situation is made feasible by the story told in those flashbacks. So we have an understanding of our main character, what motivates him, what he is capable of, why he gets enmeshed in certain events and relationships. And we learn about the Sikh religion. Finishing this book just wets your appetite for more of A.X. Ahmad's engaging writing. less
