review 1: I got this book on my kindle through Amazon’s Lending Library. I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I know nothing about Turkey’s role in WWII, but I was looking for something different and gave it a try. Thankfully the translation is smooth, and the reader will likely never notice that the book was not originally written in English.A nice balance of stories of the individual, daily lives of people and national politics, the book centers around the lives of two sisters – one in Turkey with a husband in government and the other in France, with a Jewish husband, as they struggle with the challenges of life and war.Not overly romantic, emotional, gory, scary or unrealistic, the story was a nice, plain, historical fiction read about France, Turkey and the lives of individu... moreals in WWII. I would happily recommend this to others interested in a non-battle, non-romance historical fiction of WWII.
review 2: Oh dear, such an interesting premise for a story. I had no idea about the issues of Turkey in relation to the Second World War. However I was unable to finish this. It was dull, slow paced and the audio book was hard to follow. I didn't expect action packed narrative, but I found that I simply didn't care for the characters so there was no incentive to carry on with it. One sister safe in a Turkey worries about the other (married to a Jew and fled to South of France). Maybe it's just the style of the book that didn't suit me. less
