review 1: This was so beautifully written about Ada, a well treated housemaid who gave into having sex with her Master out of duty and what transpired during Apartheid on Africa. She was taught to play the piano and did so well that she became a teacher. I loved the relationship between her and the Mrs, you can feel the love they had for each other. I looked forward to getting back to it. All of the characters were so perfectly discribed that you tend to know them and see them clearly. I also listened to some audio in the car, I loved her African voice. It was performed so well and I thoroughly enjoyed getting into this novel. More please.....
review 2: Mariam's daughter, Ada is taken under the wing of the Mistress of the house, Cathleen and taught to play the piano. C
... moreathleen has two children of her own but is drawn to the beautiful Ada. Even though the binds of apartheid are tightening around the people of South Africa their relationship grows. This is a beautiful story of love and compassion between women of two different races trying to live normal lives. Cathleen's husband is a cold and indifferent man but his son learns to love Ada but must keep it secret from his peers. Really describes the times of apartheid. less

Very readable, kind of like a South African take in "The Help"!
