review 1: I thought this is an excellent, well written book, which carried the reader through the first World War and to the end of apartheid in 1987. The author managed to convey the relationships between black, white and coloured people convincingly and particularly the menace of what apartheid stood for and what happened. I don't know what the situation is in S Africa since Mandela died, but this book managed to show love and mercy is given and received in many and varied forms between all individuals, whatever their colour. There are many details of the power of music bringing peace in troubled times. The terrible life of the black people was well represented through Ada, who was the black servant/teacher who told the story. This book is gripping and held me tight. I also felt... more I'd learned a great deal from reading it. This cover is not representative of the content, although accessible to everyone this book is very thought provoking and is definitely not chick lit.
review 2: This is one of the most touching books I've read lately. Ada is the housemaid's daughter, born in South Africa. Her story is the personal side of apartheid and how the politics of separateness affects her life and the lives of those she loves. Perhaps the strident voices against oppression had to be heard first before this story could be told. It is a softer story, but no less affecting, an individual's experiences of a tragic system that held so many people back from accomplishing their potential. less
