A Maine Clambake Mystery
review 1: “Clams + Crime = A Murderous Concoction”In Ms. Ross’s first Maine Clambake Murder Novel, “Clammed Up”, we met Julia Snowden, who had given up her life in Manhattan and her job in Venture Capital to move back to Busman’s Harbor, Maine for one summer in order to clear up her family’s failing business. “The Snowden Family Clambake” had been started by her Father several years before. With his passing, and due to a poor business decision, the Snowden Family stood to lose it all—Marrow Island (The site of their renowned clambakes), the business, and even her Mother’s home! As if Julia didn’t have enough to contend with, her Sister, Livvie talks her into taking a seat on the upcoming “Founder’s Weekend” Committee. How can she possibly handle the Sno... morewden Family Clambake details? Her Brother-in-law, Sonny had given her enough heartburn about providing food for that special event. She had even relented and hired a new helper to assist Sonny, an unknown but hard worker by the name of Cabe Stone. Sonny’s “Idea light bulb” came on and with Cabe’s help, had fashioned “The Claminator” so they could cook on the pier. What a clever idea that seemed to work well until the Claminator’s fire became intense—too intense especially when no grease is involved in the cooking of a clambake meal. When they lift the mesh skirting so they can hose down and dampen the canvas, a gruesome discovery appears--a charred human foot and part of a leg drop onto the pier. To add to the hysteria, tour guide Richelle Rose faints and sustains head injuries!Who do the foot and leg belong to? And why did Cabe Stone run away from the scene? In the midst of the fracas, acid-tongued Chairwoman Bunnie Getts gets on her high horse and starts pointing accusatory bony fingers in all directions. When the deceased is identified as local RV campsite owner Stevie Noyes, Julia decides to do some investigating on her own. Red-faced, what did she really know about Cabe Stone? And, for that matter, Stevie Noyes’ history was somewhat of a mystery as well—especially when Julia discovers things are not as copasetic as they claim to be at Camp Glooscap. We have all learned, time and time again, that people are not always what they seem. Who was the man with the camera on the balcony? Are clambake employee Pammie and Livvie both ill from the same flu, or is there skullduggery afoot? When Bunnie arrives at the clambake with Reggie Swinborne, human antennae spring into action. Did they have a hand in Stevie’s demise? Where is Cabe hiding? And why? What part, if any, does Richelle Rose play in this complex crime? What about Julia’s boyfriend, Chris? Will her Mother ever accept him? As summer is dwindling, will Julia find it in her heart to stay in Busman’s Harbor? The Author has us following multiple twists and turns and devouring clues by the page in this fast and easy cozy. She has also included some of the recipes mentioned in the storyline such as: Jacqueline’s Lobster Deviled Eggs, Livvie’s Lobster Salad and potato salad, Mrs. Gus’s Blueberry Pie, Vee’s Blueberry Pancakes, Baked Camp Beans and Camp-Style Ground Beef, “Lu’sknikn”, a round, flat quick bread that is somewhat like Irish Soda Bread, Richelle’s Tomato Salad and her famous Tuna and White Bean Salad that many of us readers will want to try. I’m looking forward to going back to Busman’s Harbor again soon—and I bet you will be too!Nancy Narma
review 2: Julia has yet to realize how important she is to her family, friends, and community... perhaps her mother and her sister can convince her that home is where she really belongs. The Snowden Family Clambake business seems to be attracting corpses ever since Julia arrived home, can she help the police solve the crimes that are threatening her family, friends and business?I loved all the different characters and how they were all connected, and that everyone seemed to gain closure from the final arrest.I look forward to reading more about the Snowden Family Clambake soon! less
