review 1: This book is average average. OK plot. OK characters. OK writing style. I don't have great praise or great complaints with any of it.The plot centers around time travel. The intrigue surrounding bunny-hopping through different eras is the book's greatest strength. The explanation of time travel (human emotion) is really weak and unsatisfying. The writing style is decidedly female. Some of the scenes have a "romance novel" feel to it. The action scenes aren't very meaty.3 bill-stars. A good read.thanks... yow, bill
review 2: This is, I think, one of the best books I've read all year. The writing style is engaging and the characters definitely feel very human. It took me a long time to decide if I liked the main male character or not, particularly as he deals wit
... moreh being two different people--the entitled English lord he was raised to be, and the twenty-first century man he learned to become in the wake of an almost two hundred year jump in time, a man of course much more in line with modern sensibilities. Obviously I relate better to the latter. The main female character is much more likeable from the outset, but she has an irritating habit of occasionally doing some very irrational things when her passions are aroused. This is also one of the better time travel books I've ever read in its explanation for time travel, time manipulation, and why major events can't be changed. I also feel that the historical part of the book is very well researched despite being populated with fictional characters. Ridgway deftly handles the styles of speech so that twenty-first century speech and expressions feel very jarring when compared to early nineteenth century. The plot is complex, but I never felt lost and always wanted to find out what would happen next. Saying much about the plot itself would give away some pretty good twists so I won't get into details.I look forward to the next installment in the series now that we know what the main threat is and the characters have figured out their loyalties. Normally I hate books that end with cliffhangers, but this ending felt more like a promise starting to unfold than a tantalizing, obnoxious "tune in next time to find out if our heroine and hero make it!!!" So for me to forgive the ending when normally I would downgrade a book that ended this way is quite the accomplishment for Ridgway. less

Gave up very quickly on this one. The writing was amateurish, and the characters unengaging.

I was enjoying this book but really did not like the rushed ending that tied up nothing.

Good, really enjoyed it. Just a few unanswered questions at the end
