review 1: Seems like the normal writing style these days. To enjoy this book more than I did, I recommend: * know very little about the history of women's rights and very little about sociology and cultural norms * make sure you have the patience for either long winded or flat characters (those are the only options in this book) * expect fate to intervene in every single life event but one, and * don't reflect on the fact the book could have been 200 pages shorter.
review 2: Belinda Alexandra proves yet again what a good storyteller she is with "Tuscan Rose", a saga set in Mussolini's Italy. Rosa is abandoned at a nunnery as a baby with only a silver key wrapped up in her swaddling robes to identify her. After a happy childhood with the nuns, she is sent out at age sixte
... moreen to work in the home of the Marchese and Marchesa Scarfiotti as a music teacher to their daughter. The Scarfiotti house holds many secrets that threaten Rosa and she soon finds herself in a desperate situation with a child to support. Fascism has Italy in its grip and the author does a particularly good job in portraying a society that has essentially gone mad with both fear and power. Rosa is a character who tugs on the heartstrings and, even though this novel is jam packed with tragedy, I really enjoyed following her journey. less
