review 1: This book was fantastic, mainly because Ben Fountain had the uncanny ability to put you in the mind of these men. Some authors write characters like they are cheap toys at a dollar store, but the best authors imbue their characters with something unique that you recognize as a human being almost immediately. I thought about this book for quite a long time after finishing it, trying to understand Billy Lynn and his compatriots as best I could. I would definitely re-read this book.
review 2: This is a remarkable book, the best war satire and indictment of how America treats its soldiers since Catch-22. Billy Lynn and his fellow members of the Bravo battalion have done something truly heroic in the midst of the war in Iraq. It lasted only 3 minutes but was broadca... morest around America, where they become instant heroes. Now they've come home (for the moment) to be feted during the halftime show at the Dallas Cowboys game. The entirety of the novel takes place as the boys are backstage at the game, with various people coming up to talk to them about the war in Iraq and how the feeling in America has changed since "nina leven." Meanwhile their agent takes phone calls from Ron Howard and Hilary Swank's people as he tries to line up producers and stars for the docudrama that will play out what they did, and then it's time for Bravo to march out onto the field and join Beyonce and Destiny's Child. This is a sad, hilarious, heartbreaking, and infuriating look at how we create heroes (who don't necessarily want to be heroes), and, even worse, commodify them and then forget about them when a LOLcat video replaces their heroic actions on YouTube. Deftly written, this is a beautiful book that deserves to be considered an instant American classic. less
