review 1: I got this book on my phone to read as it was free and I was being cheap and saving dollars. I was drawn to the cover and then when I read it was self-published even more so.That said it was a struggle for me. I could see some very interesting ideas forming, but by the end it all seemed so flat to me. Im not usually a fan of magic to this extent. Subtlety is better in my opinion, unless youre into the fantastical.The writing suffers somewhat. Now Im not saying it was bad - to write a whole novel let alone a series is a challenge... I just felt some heavy editing may have improved the constant repetition of sentences and descriptions etc.It was a good first go, however I am grateful this book was for free, as I dont think Ill be buying or reading the rest. It just didnt sta... morey with me, even after I put it down I didnt really think or dwell on anything I had just read like I do with my favourite books.Read it if you have free time and are just looking for an uncomplicated tale, but if you want something more intrinsic this isnt the book for you.
review 2: Put downableI'm about a third of the way through and I am really struggling with this. The invention and world building is OK, but the writing style and characterisation is filled with lots of little annoyances that really jar on my sensibilities.Another reviewer described the welter of monsters and creatures as muddled and I think she is right. The whole thing is muddled. It is not straight up fantasy, it is not quite a mantasy as the lead character has an addiction (which is sadly the only interesting thing about him). It is not a saga of norse origin, it is not a faerie tale. It's as though all the elements were thrown in a blender and all that emerged was mush. Genre mash ups, when they work, are excellent; they lead to great invention and spawn new genres. This isn't one of those books. less
