review 1: The story of Hardwick, Vermont and its quest to become an even more locally sustainable community; a community which makes local food available to all while employing many within the community while also continuing the natural circle of agriculture. The book contains the two very different views seen in the town; one the agrepreneurs (agricultural entrepreneurs) who tend to be from outside of Vermont with big and grandiose visions which require millions of dollars and large facilities, and the other the locals who have lived on and worked in the area, often for generations, who resent the unwanted publicity generated by the agrepreneurs (who also say never seek out the locals and their desires or opinions). The author is from a town near Hardwick and provides fair treatmen... moret to each sides, perhaps realizing that a balance of each is what is needed. What is really interesting is Hewitt's conversations and visits with genuine Vermonters.
review 2: I'm sure the author was intending to be folksy and candid, but the frequent profanity and lewd and utterly unnecessary sexual comments thrown in from time to time made the book more crass than accessible. It did provide an interesting look into the politics and workings of one town's local food movement and agrepreneurialism, but it was longer on exploring the questions to ask than it was on answers to those questions. But, that is of necessity. Food is an intimate thing and there likely never will be agreement about what "local" means and what "scale" of production is acceptable. As always, I did not appreciate the suggestion that we take land out of private hands and socialize food production. We need more freedom, not more restriction. less

Couldn't get past page 20. Didn't enjoy the writing style at all.
