review 1: Well researched and true, tells the tale through friendship between Philby and Nicholas Elliot. I was hoping to understand Philby better, get underneath the why of him, why and how he could lie to everyone close to him. I still don't understand that. I understand it better when I read a John LeCarre novel. That said, this is a compelling book, describing step by step how these spies got started, how and 'why' Philby became a double spy, how he did his work, the damage he did, how he FINALLY got tripped up, how long it took to find him out. It was a page turner for me.
review 2: This was a fascinating yet distressing account of Kim Philby, a famous British spy for the Soviets. Philby maintained 'friendships' with others in the British secret service despite his
... moreown loyalty to Russia, trading on those affections to get information that resulted in many deaths. The author mentioned Philby's troubled relationship with his father as one problem that may have led to his disloyalty. It was a troubling picture of an old-boys' network that overlooked caution in favor of class ties and overdrinking as an accepted part of life. less
