review 1: I wanted to love this. Instead I struggled to even finish it. The premise is fresh and intoxicating, but the writing is so unbearably soulless that it is a chore to read. The characters are uninteresting and flatter then two dimensions. I kept reading in hopes it would go somewhere, but beyond the boring writing the plot is equally void of substance. If you want to read a well written and enveloping story about the loss of words and the power they hold, go pick up The Word Exchange by Alena Graedon, which is also by no means perfect, but is compulsively readable at least.
review 2: Sigh. I really wanted to "get" this book, but I guess I am just not smart enough for this particular kind of metaphorical novel. I had made it a little less than halfway through when... more I realized that not only was I getting severely depressed by it, I was also pretty annoyed at the author's use of language. Well, that's not his fault, it's mine for keeping on reading, right? So as much as it pained me not to finish after having invested a certain amount of time in it, I put it down and am now trying to go on about my life. less
