review 1: Move over Waldo -- helping Papa Bear look for his Little Bear in these photos is so much fun. The illustrations are full of funny and charming details . . . like the mermaid under the sea, the person who's spent too long in the tropical sun and is already sunburned, the man leading a woman to a private room below decks on the ship, all the activities happening in the cabins of the ship (you can actually see what goes on behind closed doors . . . lots of reading!). Turns out that Little Bear stays in the company of a new friend, a little boy he meets in the early pages of the book, throughout the rest of the book. Children will pour over this one, seeing more each time they look.
review 2: In this companion to The Bear’s Song (2013), the story picks up where
... morethe previous book left off. Seeking refuge from the snow, Papa Bear and Little Bear cuddle up in a warm department store. A child mistakes Little Bear for a teddy, and with Papa Bear in hot pursuit, Little Bear is whisked through the city, aboard an ocean liner, and onto a tropical island. Readers will delight in the large-format illustrations full of wonderful discoveries and charming details amid the hustle and bustle of people and animals. Adults will appreciate sophisticated references, for example a secret tryst and allusion to the movie Titanic on the ocean liner spread. Chaud’s art is loose, sketchy and fluid—the curvy lines pair well with the fantastic elements and goofiness—and the stylized illustrations suggest movement and exuberance. The colors are solid and bold but the color palette is limited which gives it a vintage sensibility. Like an ursine Where’s Waldo?, children will enjoy poring over the details in each repeated reading. less
