review 1: This book bordered on genius. Maybe it was genius. I don't know. The Monkey sex kind of ruined it for me. When I purchased the book, the lady at the bookstore said, "There may possibly be a hint of monkey sex in it." I can handle possible hints, I thought. But the focus of the book for several chapters on Bruno's sexual relationship with Lydia went too far for me. I'm no prude, but bestiality was too far. I didn't believe it. Not one bit. Sure, I could believe in Bruno's transformation into a talking, acting chimpanzee. But not the monkey sex. Why would Lydia continue to "make love," as Bruno said, to a chimp after the rape? This unfortunately kept me from loving the book as much as I would have. I loved the tales of Bruno as he learned to think in words, acquire memory, a... morend become more of a man than an ape. The monkey sex just got in the way for me.
review 2: I loved this book. Fiction is not usually my first choice but for some reason, I picked up this book and once I did, I had a hard time putting it down. The author is brilliant and his style and "voice" of the man character, Bruno the chimp, are only two of the aspects that kept me so wrapped up in this book. The story, the humanization of a chimp, makes you think about so much more than the story itself. In the beginning, I kept thinking it would be a great book to be assigned as required reading in High Schools, especially because it is full of references to Shakespeare and it would be a fun book to really study and analyze but then it does get pretty sexually explicit in several spots so it probably won't end up in school libraries any time soon. If you are looking for a great book to curl up with and spend a weekend reading, I highly recommend The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore. less
