review 1: What began out as a startling, well put together novel ends with a rush and a huge gap of 40 years and a disappointing ending. The last few chapters failed me because they seem to have gloss over a huge part of Easters life. I did like the reference to real people, like Marcus Garvey and Langston Hughes. Was well on its way to a 4 star rating but fizzled towards the end. Would recommend, but temper expectations. That being said I will check out the authors other works. The book was enjoyable for the first 75% of it. I had to reduce it to a two star. That ending was that bad. I'm very sad to be so critical but you can't do what what done.....

... moreally understand that this woman had so many problems in her life that no one would aspire to, but I just thought it was overdone, and I just didn't love reading it. I kept expecting it to get better, and although the ending sort of redeemed much of the not-so-glorious parts of the book, it just wasn't enough for me to get all excited about. It seems that Ms. McFadden tried to follow along the lines of the marvelous "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neal Hurston, but in my opinion it did not even come close. less
