review 1: I read the book version after I have been told that it was better than the wattpad version (but now that I said I was reading the book version, they were saying the wattpad version was better). This is the very first Summit book and wattpad story I have ever read. The first "mainstreamed" story that I dared to read. Let me start with the things that I liked about it. I liked the spark between Athena and Kenji, I guess. I could feel the attraction between two characters and the "kilig" wasn't forced. I also liked the scene where they used "I can't breathe" as their I love you. That was quite unique. The rest...I felt like I was reading a patched up story of Meteor Garden, A Millionaire's First Love and P.S. I love you. I guess it was too cliched for me because I found mysel... moref in a "poker-faced situation" when scenes were supposed to stimulate certain reactions and emotions. I felt like Kenji was Dao Ming Sze and Athena was sort of like a less aggressive Shan Cai. Lucas was like a Hua Tze Lei as well and Jiggs and Kirby were Mei Tzou and Ximen. I also found myself getting a bit sleepy in between scenes because I felt like those scenes and conversations were already used too many times. I also felt like there were a lot of unnecessary scenes. The story was too descriptive for me. It seemed like it only aimed to describe what was happening. I knew nothing of Athena and Kenji's innermost thoughts. Who were they when they were mad? When they were bored? When they were jealous? When they were enraged? How did they feel? What were they like when they were kids? Why was Kenji a 'gangster'? Why was Athena partial to good guys? But maybe, this was just me being an OC reader so I'll let this part go. I found a series of questions and comments: 1.) Athena was a transferee. EVERYBODY knew Kenji. And EVERYBODY knew about Kenji and Athena (Abigail). So when Kenji asked for the number of an Athena Dizon, why would you give Athena-Dizon-The-Transferee's number? Isn't it supposed to be understood that he meant HIS ATHENA? If the "number-giver" had his own reasons, it appears to be unstated.2.) Why did Kenji and Abigail broke up? It seemed to have Kenji in constant fits so why? It's one of the core conflicts of the story so why? It's one of the reasons why Kenji and Athena are in constant fights, so why? It seemed to have been a big issue so why? It was never, again, stated. 3.) What happened between Abigail, Lucas and Kenji? This one's connected to my second question. How did Lucas and Abigail end up together, pissing Kenji off so much that he had to endure that amount of pain and anger for some period of time? When did their relationship start? How did it progress? How did it end? How did Lucas entered the scene? What did he do? 4.) Kenji was a gangster. Why? Did he take pleasure in kicking asses? Was he a neglected child? Was it caused by his love for Abigail? Was he like than since he was a child? Or was it caused by Abigail breaking up with him? Athena once said he never understood Kenji's confused personality and changing of moods. Yes, girl. Me too.5.) Too much coincidences. Two Athena Dizons with the same age, somehow existed in the same school, fell in love with the same guy (Kenji), at some point left Kenji for the same guy (Lucas), and both suffering from serious diseases. I don't know about you but isn't it a bit doubtful? I mean sure, the name would be okay. But the other instances.... :shrug:6.) I cannot feel the intensity of their love for each other. Words? Yes. Frequent I love yous. Sacrifices? Hmm. Illogical ones but yes, there were sacrifices. Actions? Feelings? I don't think they've shown enough. 7.) Is it age appropriate? They were seventeen and they were cutting classes and shoving tequilas and beer through their throats and partying out. Fourth year high school, yes? To me, they could pass as 24-year-olds. Well, I don't know, of course. That would always depend on the culture of the characters. But I just don't think the characters basically depicted significant lessons for young readers. If I was seventeen and I read this, I'll demand my mom to allow me to go out at night, dance at bars and drink beer. Huzza. 8.) For the love of God, they were living together at 18 and were married by 19. Whut? Like....whut? Am I this lost in today's "trends"?9.) It deserves a better ending. Really. Like she should've killed Kenji too and made them meet in heaven and the epilogue would be them, watching their crazy friends go crazy with their lives. Kidding aside, I really think it does deserve a better ending. The characters were young. Too young. If Athena really had to die, why not when she's twenty four or twenty six just so they can get over their childish love for each other and grow up as a couple? Thus, I end my reactions here. My reactions are pure honest ones. As a reader, I felt this way and reacted this way. I hope you won't take it against me. Peace yo. ^^V
review 2: Jeez. Tragic. i cried a lot. i mean A LOT. While reading this, i just thought, "bakit kung sino pa ang may deserve ng happy ending, sila pa yung napagkakaitan?". I know I'm being overly dramatic, yeah, I still know that this is Fiction, pero diba, isipin mo, bakit nga ba? Bakit kung sino pa yung masaya, sila pa yung limited yung oras together? And why is the movie soooo different with the book? I mean, don't get me wrong, nakakatuwa naman yung movie. Pero kung sinunod nila yung book, ohmy. Goodluck nalang sa paglabas ng cinemas. I have to admit, bwisit si Kenji nung start. And that Abigail, ugh. Pero yung love nila Kenji and Athena (#2), that kind of love deserves a lifetime. ❤ less
