REVIEW: Eragon

Have you ever looked at a book you bought and been afraid to read it? I had that with Eragon. I knew it was a high fantasy book (my absolute favourite genre) but I didn’t dare to start it. I had read some reviews after I got the book and some of them were pretty negative. But after time I was really curious about it and wanted to know myself if it was that bad. A month ago, I decided to pick it up.

Overnight his simple life is shattered and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands

Review

What a shame that I didn’t read this book sooner! When I started Eragon, I hoped I would like it. But it exceeded all my expectations! Epic battles, ancient swords, deaths, magic and prophecies, what fantasy lover doesn’t like the sound of that?

I was immediately sucked into it and I couldn’t put the book down. I finished this book in 8 days, which is quite fast if you consider that I’m the slowest reader of our galaxy. There was not one moment that was boring.

Character

Our main character and hero of this story is Eragon, a 15 year old farmer’s boy who still needs to learn a lot about the world and himself. He’s a bit impulsive, reckless and stubborn. This mix is not ideal and sometimes he does something stupid, just like any 15 year old. But sometimes that can also result into some heroic actions. The only thing that bothered me a bit, was his strange feelings (I wouldn’t call it love of obsession) towards a girl he barely knows. I hope this will change in the next book but I doubt that.

Another main character is Saphira, the dragon. She guides Eragon whenever he needs advice or when she thinks he needs it. She’s also a bit stubborn but in a funny way. She’s my favourite character of this book because she has a mind of her own and she’s very wise (and she’s a dragon).

Then there’s also Brom and Murthag. Brom is a old storyteller who knows a lot about dragons and who helps Eragon. Murthag also joins Eragon. He’s a bit older then Eragon but they are much alike.

World building

The world building is great, the history, the characters and the world itself. I’ve fallen in love with it. I could picture everything clearly. It almost felt like I was there myself, the description was very detailed and balanced, you’re not overwhelmed with unnecessary details. You get what you need to know about this world and what’s important to the story.

Overall, I loved the book and I can’t wait to continue this series.

Have you read Eragon and did you like it? Or will you read it? Tell me in the comments.
