review 1: I felt this is an important book. The author makes a compelling case that the generally accepted notion that gerrymandering is responsible for the widening chasm between the political is not in fact true. In fact the polarized nature of the two parties is reflective of the way the American population is self-selecting itself into single party districts. While no solutions are offered to moderate our discourse, the first step is to recognize the problem....
review 2: I'll say this simply, everyone should read this book. It describes our present country as it refines itself away from awareness. A story from the book is revealing. A Republican pollster told Bishop that if he wanted to know if the respondent was Republican or Democrat, he simply asked if the person
... more liked to be near other people or didn't. If they didn't, if they liked space and the country, it could be pretty sure that he was speaking to a Republican. If they wanted to live in a close community or a city, they were Democrats. What came out of those positions as they're evolving is a constellation of positions on everything ranging from abortion to gun control that increasingly are becoming more polarized and polarizing. We are blaming Congress for their lack of action when we are the cause. We don't want compromise. We want firm positions, no matter what the result. The mess we're in is of our creation. This book reveals, in chapter after chapter, how this is true. less
