review 1: This is definitely worth the read. For those who have no idea about the Modern History of India, this is a must-read. Although the book does not cover many important events such as Poona Pact and such, it does provide a basic guide line for those who are interested in knowing outline of Modern History. The book covers many issues which might not have been covered in other historical books of the time such as Education and social conditions of the time. Moreover the language used by Mr. Chandra is very simple and understandable.

... moreas expecting opinions from an IAS preparation text book. People find history boring in school because it deals merely in facts, dates and names. A study of history is incomplete unless we form opinions about it. We talk about it, discuss, argue and even demolish mosques because of our interpretation of history. A book that simply lays out the facts without the author giving his own touch is too academic for my taste. In fact, I think even academic study can be sexier. It is the story in the history appeals to the casual reader. I'm off to buy Guha's Makers of Modern India. less

A reprint of old NCERT 11th standard text book. Average. Biased at times.
